When North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand approached Marshall Day Acoustics to propose a new Sound system for their 12,000 seat grandstand, the expectations were high. Having suffered ten years with a budget-driven and ageing system that had well-passed it’s use-by date, something special was needed for a venue looking to secure its future as a nation-leading outdoor arena.

“The customer had huge acoustical problems inside those areas, because of the seating layout, the reflective table surfaces and the huge, tall glass windows that face the track. They needed a high Q, precisely aimable loudspeaker system that would direct sound onto the audience but keep it away from the hard surfaces – without impeding the clear view through the windows out to the track".

Though originally built for baseball, 16 other sports and competitions have been presented at Tropican Field, including hockey, sprint car racing, gymnastics, ping-pong, karate, equestrian events, and figure skating. The largest crowd to date - 47,150 - appeared at the August 11, 1990 concert featuring The New Kids on the Block. With such a varied group of events taking place, SportSound selected the Renkus-Heinz PN102/LA line array enclosures because of the product's flexibility.

Another factor in the installation design was Renkus-Heinz’s
Reference Point Array (RPA) concept. Milos Renftel of TTS Scandinavia says: “Working with an RPA made the process
of specifying and installing the loudspeaker cluster faster,
simpler and less expensive than conventional methodology,
which complemented the savings we made by only having to install
CAT-5 and mains cables and by having integral amplifiers in
the speakers.

Breaking from traditional stadium sound
system design, the architecture is based around CobraNet audio
distribution over CAT5 cabling to each of 44
active Renkus-Heinz ST4 HO loudspeakers in the
main bowl — making Derby the first stadium to
use weatherised self-powered cabinets in an outside environment.

Heinz. These include TRue
Array Principle (TRAP) enclosures to provide optimum coverage
in tight-packed arrays; Complex
Conic horns for accurate pattern control and
natural reproduction; and the company’s CoEntrant
Topology, which delivers high power from compact
cabinets by integrating the outputs of mid and high drivers into a wideband, high power
true point source that can be loaded with a single waveguide.

Since the
ambient noise level in the grandstands during an auto race
was expected to approach 115 dB, the system had to be capable
of uniform coverage at the same level or higher!
Using EASE electro-acoustic simulation
software, Ron Sauro modeled dozens of different
approaches using a variety of loudspeaker cabinet combinations
at various spacings and articulations. “I could not
have done this job without EASE,” he maintains.
