PAV INSTALLS RENKUS-HEINZ AT HANNOVER PREUSSAG ARENA

By Mike Lethby

2002 Hannover, Germany
The Preussag Arena in Hannover exemplifies the modern multi-purpose arena. Built for Expo 2000, once the show was over and the exhibitors had packed away their pavilions, the arena took on its new life as a 12,500-capacity music and sports venue.

For Germany’s exclusive Renkus-Heinz distributor PAV, it was another opportunity to use the special abilities of the American loudspeaker brand to solve a variety of technical and acoustical challenges. The company had already installed Renkus-Heinz at a variety of prestigious venues including the new Hamburg Stadium, a Dusseldorf exhibition hall and the new 120,000-capacity Euro Speedway 2000 stadium at Lausitz near Berlin.

The German appreciation of engineering precision and durability is evident in the approach to the demands of the Preussag Arena. Says PAV director Gerhard Hackl: "For any multi-purpose arena like this we need to design a completely flexible audio system. The breadth of the Renkus-Heinz range, and the availability of customised loudspeakers, gives us the perfect set of tools for this type of project."

The arena lives a double life. A built-in stage at one end provides facilities for live music events, principally pop and classical concerts. For sports events such as boxing and ice skating (the Preussag Arena also boasts an ice floor) there is a distributed PA system.

The stage system is a Renkus-Heinz CoEntrant PA, flown in left-and-right clusters above the stage. The distributed system, mounted under the canopy catwalk, comprises CoEntrant, CT-5 and CT-6 speakers, and doubles up as a time-delayed system for concerts to supplement the stage system. Renkus-Heinz amplifiers power both systems, totalling 120kW, which are supervised using the company’s R-Control remote control network and mixed on a Crest console.

The project was carried out on behalf of installation contractor Tyco, and, comments Gerhard Hackl, "Precisely meets the client’s requirement for 105dB of sound level at every seat in the arena."
